Verification / Sustainable Agriculture Verification

In 2010, PepsiCo completed the framework of a comprehensive on-farm sustainability verification program which addresses environmental, social and economic components of sustainability and reflects our Sustainable Agriculture Policy. The content for the Environmental Pillar of the program was completed and is being piloted in 2011 and the beginning of 2012.

The Environmental Pillar contains nine environmental sustainability indicators (soil, water, air, energy, agrochemicals, nutrients, GHGs, waste and biodiversity) with detailed criteria and best practices that can be used to meet those criteria. Work will continue in 2012 to build out the Social and Economic Pillars for the verification program.

In 2011, the on-farm verification program will be piloted across core commodities and provide important validation before commercial application at the farm level. Meanwhile, in response to specific local market demands or opportunities, some of our grower suppliers have participated in various certification schemes such as Rainforest Alliance and Global GAP. For example, Global Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) certification has been introduced to PepsiCo suppliers with three growers certified global GAP and five additional growers completing the process in Brazil. Eight growers achieved certification in Argentina.

We are working to ensure our verification program complements these and other existing certification schemes to leverage best practices and avoid duplication for growers.
